My friend Mitch is a professional triathlete who needed a website to use as a profile to appeal to potential sponsors with a page dedicated to his private run coaching services. The main challenge of this site was showcasing a lot of information (ex. racing schedule, results, bio, coaching services, etc.) while ensuring it’s easy to navigate and understand. I found that using the drop-downs for his past results made the site easy to scan and kept it intuitive as to where you could find more information.

On the visual side of things, I challenged myself to do two things:

  1. Use a dark theme. I have always felt more comfortable designing with dark text on a lighter background, so I wanted to challenge myself to design a dark-themed site. Mitch wanted to use a dark navy colour with a brighter gold, so I spent a few hours tweaking hex values to find a suitable ‘midnight’ colour for the background.

  2. Use only one font. I’m a nerd for nice typography and can sometimes get carried away playing around with font combinations. Mitch is a straight shooter, so it felt fitting to use a single font to do the job. I came across Aspekta Variable which gave me very precise control of the font weight to separate the headings from body copy. It made a serious case for one of my favourite fonts to design with.

I’m pretty happy with the end result of this site. You can see it for yourself and learn more about Mitch at www.mitchellkirby.com
